A beautiful sunny spring day, June 6, 2014. Terri and I took off for a new kayaking exploration. We went mid afternoon, so even though it was only 72 degrees, it was vey warm in the sun. We launched at a Lake Ontario Public Boat launch right where Sandy Creek empties into Lake Ontario in Hamlin, NY. If you take the Lake Ontario Parkway towards Hamlin you will see Boat launch signs near NY19.
The parking lot was very large and accommodates large boats on trailers. There is a concrete launch but also floating docks which were just the right height to slide into your kayak. They also had a porta-Jane which I did not use, went in the woods, cannot believe I am writing that.
The kayaking was very flat and calm. We went upstream and had no problem paddling. Saw much wildlife. Many turtles sunning on logs and birds everywhere. This is not a paddle for hot summer days as it is all total sun. We did not go very far upstream because I was getting too hot. Turned around and came back downstream.
Saw a swan near the launch, whom we think was guarding a nest. Went over to the right or east of the launch and around an island. We came upon a swan family, parents with small fuzzy babies floating around them. The father got his tail feathers in a tizzy when we came in view. We watched from a distance, taking many pictures. Lovely.
I ventured out into the lake a little but was pretty wavy. Came back quickly into safe waters.
We saw some anglers but not too many on this Friday pm. Highly recommend this site for a relaxing paddle.
5 stars!
Happy paddling!
